How often should you wash your puppy?

It’s no wonder that dogs don’t necessarily have the finest odors. And if they haven’t rolled around in a strange liquid in the backyard, the dog will most definitely smell like, well, a puppy.

Although washing your puppy will certainly enhance the scent and everything they have rolled in, you should not bathe them too often to prevent drying out their skin.

Since your puppy’s skin is so delicate, you can only bathe them once a month or less, but you can make an exception if they roll around in the stinky! Using dog shampoo, not human shampoo, so dog shampoos are designed with the dog’s natural pH balance in mind.

The pH balance of a dog is more basic than that of humans, and human shampoos and conditioners will irritate your puppy’s skin. Irritated or torn skin can also make your puppy more vulnerable to bacteria and parasites.

So, use gentle dog shampoos or check with a doctor if you intend to use one that is not meant for your puppy.

Bathing is a relatively fast and simple operation, particularly if you gain the trust of a friend or family member. Brush your puppy before washing to prevent your pool from being clogged with dog fur!

Before you begin, make sure you have several towels, your dog shampoo, and a little pitcher, tub, or bucket nearby. There is no need to fill your tub with water for your puppy’s soak.

Load the bucket or tub of lukewarm water instead. Place your puppy in the shower, apply a small amount of dog shampoo to their back, and then slowly pour water on them, working the shampoo into their hair.

Be careful around the eyes and avoid cleaning inside the ears as this can lead in infection. Using the bowl to gently wipe out the shampoo after you’ve cleaned your dog.

Wrap your puppy in towels and place them in a warm space to dry. Enjoy your clean puppy’s company until it’s clean.
